6 Limehouse Police Station

Limehouse Police Station opened on 28 May 1897 and played an instrumental role in the interactions between legal authorities and the local Chinese communities. The police station was renovated in 1940, and works were completed after the war.

There was a great deal of interaction between the police and and the local Chinese community often sparked by cries of 'moral panic' with regards to the use of opium, gambling dens, crime gangs or accusations of Chinese men 'luring' young English girls into immoral lifestyles.

Please refer to the Bibliography in the 'More' Section to see news paper headlines which capture some of the media sensationalism which criminalized the local Chinese community.
