5 Pennyfields
Pennyfields was another of the streets that were part of 'Limehouse Chinatown.' Pennyfields was where the Shanghai born Chinese community lived. The Noodle St Restaurant was originally a Chinese restaurant that has changed management over the years. The Bengal Classic Indian Restaurant was also a Chinese Resturant originally, and reflects later migration trends to East London.
Pennyfields News
Pennyfields was also where the Pennyfields News Wall stood although we do not know exactly where it stood. It becomes even more difficult to trace due to 'slum clearance' schemes in the area. The News Wall was used to communicate news from abroad to the Limehouse Chinatown community as well as news within the community and used Chinese brush stroke characters.

Just off West India Dock Road, is Pennyfields.

Standing on No 9 Pennyfields, whether this was an original Chinese Hand laundry is not known, however it provides an interesting visual for what may have stood here.

This used to be a Chinese Restaurant, standing in No 11 Pennyfields. Today it is a Bengali/Indian Restaurant in 1998, reflecting the more recent Bengali migration to East London.
