These are the original pillars from the West India Dock Gates for No 1 Warehouse. This is also where the daily 'call on' took place where dockers would come to find work on ships, many of whom were turned away with increasing competition for work. This led to this area being nicknamed ' The Blues.' The Dockers toilets also stood close to these gates, one for white sailors and a separate one for foreign sailors. As the only toilet facilities available on the Import Dock these were often odorous.
